Kidney for Pop Pop
We are raising awareness to support Tom Doherty's kidney transplant journey. Your compassion can make all the difference in his life and his family.
Pop Pop's Story
Tom Doherty, beloved “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren, has been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD). His kidneys are failing and he will soon begin dialysis. Though dialysis can sustain him, a kidney transplant is the best chance for long-term health and quality of life. Pop Pop urgently needs a living kidney donor to save his life. Right now, we are holding on to hope—and asking for help in the most personal way possible. If you have ever thought about becoming a living kidney donor, or if you’re willing to learn more, you could be the reason he gets more time here with us.
Unfortunately, nobody in our family is a compatible match. Terri, his wife, is currently enrolled in a paired kidney exchange program to donate, but despite waiting and hoping, a match has still not been found.
Living kidney donors can continue to live healthy, full lives after donation. One selfless decision has the power to save someone's life and give them years they might not otherwise have.
It’s hard to put into words what this would mean to our family. We are not just hoping for a transplant—we are hoping for more birthdays, more holidays, more quiet conversations, more time with someone we love so deeply.
If you are considering becoming a living donor, or have any questions about the process, please contact the Stony Brook Kidney Transplant Team at 631-444-2209 to learn more and mention Tom by name.
Even if donating isn’t possible, sharing this message could help us reach the one person who can help save him.
Thank you for reading this, for caring, and for helping us hold on to hope when we need it most. ❤️
Every share, every prayer, and every act of kindness brings us closer to a healthier future for Tom. Here’s how you can make a difference.
